Purpose of this Study

We are doing this study to test an experimental simulation of "extravehicular activities" (EVAs), which are more commonly known as spacewalks. We want to know if this simulation will provide good training for astronauts who will have to perform EVAs during their space missions.

What is Involved?

Description

If you choose to join this study, you will come in for a screening visit to find out if you're eligible to take part in the training simulation. During the screening visit, you will:
  • Have a physical exam
  • Have a blood draw
  • Undergo a rigorous exercise test to measure your fitness level (VO2 max test)
If you are eligible, we will schedule you to come in for the main study day. The main study consists of 6 hours breathing 100% oxygen, followed by up to 6 hours in an altitude chamber at a pressure equivalent to 30,000 feet above sea level. During this time, we will ask you to perform various tasks, like light arm and leg exercises, while we use ultrasound technology to monitor your body's activity and vital signs. The main study day will lasts around 13 hours.
