Project HOPE 1000 (Better Understanding Pregnancy)

Purpose of this Study

We are doing the Project HOPE study to better understand the health outcomes of moms and babies. We want to identify factors that contribute to poor birth outcomes, which might include premature both or low birthweight. We also want to learn more about what contributes to positive or negative maternal health outcomes, and longer-term child health and well-being outcomes, including academic achievement and physical development.

Who Can Participate?

Eligibility

Adults ages 18+ who:<ul>
<li>Are less than 23 weeks pregnant</li>
<li>Expect to deliver only 1 baby</li>
<li>Plan to use a Duke pediatrician after their child is born</li></ul>

What is Involved?

If you choose to join this study, we will ask to collect several samples while you are pregnant and at the time you have your baby. These samples will be collected once per trimester and include:<ul>
<li>Blood</li>
<li>Urine</li>
<li>Microbiome samples</li>
<li>Saliva</li>
<li>Cord blood and placenta tissue (after you deliver your baby)</li></ul>
We will also ask you to fill out surveys at various times during the study.
