Purpose of this Study

If you join this study, your care will be similar to the usual treatment for an abdominal aortic aneurysm. You will still receive the scans, visits, and treatments you need. The main difference is that your treatment plan will be decided by chance. Some people may have surgery earlier, depending on their group. You will also be asked to fill out questionnaires and allow the study team to collect information from your medical records or Medicare. Taking part in the study will last about five years and will include one or two in person visits and a few follow up contacts by phone or video.

Who Can Participate?

Eligibility

People can join this study if they are women who are 50 years old or older and have a small bulge in a large blood vessel in the belly, called an abdominal aortic aneurysm. The aneurysm must be in a location below the kidneys. A surgeon must also confirm that the aneurysm can be treated with a special type of repair that uses a stent placed inside the blood vessel.

What is Involved?

Description

This study is looking at a treatment for a condition called an abdominal aortic aneurysm, which is a bulge in a large blood vessel in the belly. The study focuses on women who have smaller aneurysms. Doctors are trying to find out if fixing the aneurysm earlier with a less invasive surgery is better than waiting and watching it grow. This is important because women may have a higher risk of the aneurysm breaking even when it is small. Surgery is usually done when the aneurysm gets larger, but this study is checking if earlier surgery may help. The study also looks at the risks, because surgery can have serious problems, including the chance of death.
