Purpose of this Study

This study lasts about 7 months and is fully remote. There will be 15 study visits that take place over a video call – most will take only 30-minutes. You will take a urine test at home to confirm you smoke and set a date to quit smoking. Every day for 2 weeks before you quit, you will 1) complete a short diary and 2) complete a brief survey and take a photo of your surroundings every time you smoke and 10 times randomly on your smartphone. After you quit, you will be given nicotine patches, complete short diaries for 1 month, and attend 30-minute video visits —weekly at first, then every other week, and later monthly. At each visit, we will ask questions about if you smoked recently, send brief surveys to your phone, and ask for a breath sample using a small device we send to you. People who finish the study and complete all surveys can earn up to $525.

What is Involved?

Description

The purpose of this study is to learn how the places people go every day can make it easier or harder for them to quit smoking. The study uses technology to look for patterns in different environments and see how these places might affect a person’s cravings or habits. By doing this, the researchers hope to understand why quitting is harder for some people than others and find better ways to help people stop smoking in the future.
