ACE COMET

Purpose of this Study

The COMET Study includes up to 4 visits to the study center. Each visit lasts about 2 to 3 hours. During the visits, children will wear special equipment for a brain test called an EEG and do fun, play-based activities. Parents or caregivers may be asked to answer questions or do interviews at home. Families will get $50 for each visit.

Who Can Participate?

Eligibility

The COMET Study is looking for children who are 3 to 5 years old and can sit still for a short time while wearing a special cap for a brain test called an EEG. There are two groups in the study: - Healthy Volunteers Group: Children in this group do not have any known learning, developmental, or mental health conditions. They also do not have close family members with autism. - Autistic Children Group: Children in this group have been diagnosed with autism and have an IQ of 70 or higher. All children in the study must: - Have a parent or caregiver who speaks and understands English. - Be taking any medicines for at least 8 weeks without changes. - Not have certain medical conditions like epilepsy, genetic syndromes, or serious birth problems. - Be able to complete the EEG with some help.

What is Involved?

Description

The COMET Study is trying to learn how children's brains react to different kinds of activities, like social and non-social ones, using a brain test called EEG. By including children who do not have autism, the study hopes to better understand how all children grow and learn. This can help scientists find better ways to support kids with autism in the future.
