Macrophage Regulation of Ozone-Induced Lung Inflammation (MOLI Study for Healthy Volunteers)

Purpose of this Study

We are doing this study to understand how environmental exposures may be involved in lung function. We want to find out how immune cells in the lungs are affected by irritants that are present in the environment.

Who Can Participate?

Eligibility

Adults ages 18-55 who:
  • Are in good general health; OR
  • Have a history of COVID-19 that resulted in mild symptoms and no evidence of a lower respiratory tract infection and no need for supplemental oxygen; OR
  • Have a history of COVID-19 that resulted in a documented lower respiratory tract infection at least 6 months ago and have since recovered and are breathing normally

What is Involved?

Description

If you choose to join this study, you will:
  • Have a 1-day screening visit that includes a blood draw and breathing tests
  • Have a 2-day series of testing that includes a blood draw and a brief breathing test before and after inhaling air that contains either filtered air or ozone
  • Have a bronchoscopy
  • Have a second 2-day series of testing 18-20 days after the first series (whatever type of air you did not get the first time will be delivered to you this time)
Each study visit to our clinic will take about 3-3.5 hours. The study will take about 4-6 weeks to finish.
