Vivo SBIR (Prediabetes)

Purpose of this Study

We are doing this study is to test the effectiveness of a new virtual exercise training program created for older individuals who are living with prediabetes.

Who Can Participate?

Eligibility

Adults ages 60+ who:
  • Have a sedentary lifestyle (do not stick to a dedicated exercise routine)
  • Are diagnosed with prediabetes (hemoglobin A1C level between 5.7-6.4%)
  • Can walk independently and participate in a low-intensity exercise program
  • Do not take any diabetes or weight loss medications

What is Involved?

Description

If you choose to join this study, you will get a random assignment (like a coin flip) to either:
  • The study's exercise group; OR
  • The study's waitlist control group
If you are assigned to the exercise group, you will take part in a 12-week online strength training program. These group exercise classes will take place 2 times per week for 45 minutes per session. If you are assigned to the control group, you will not be enrolled in the exercise program and will continue your same daily routine. After 12 weeks of continuing your daily routine, you will have the option of joining the exercise group if you want. Before and after your assignment to the exercise group or control group, you will:
  • Visit our clinic for strength and physical function tests
  • Have blood draws
  • Answer questionnaires
  • Wear a physical activity tracker
