Linking Phenotyping to Molecular Signatures in Right Ventricular Dysfunction

Purpose of this Study

We are doing this study to learn more about why the right side of the heart doesn't work well in certain heart conditions. We're using heart tissue samples from people with specific heart problems to help us make these important discoveries.

Who Can Participate?

Eligibility

Adults ages 18+ who are scheduled to receive either of the following surgeries:
  • LVAD implant; OR
  • LVAD explant due to heart transplant

What is Involved?

Description

LVAD Implant Patients If you choose to join this study and are eligible because you have a scheduled surgery to get a left ventricular assist device (LVAD), your surgeon will use a precise biopsy needle to obtain two tissue samples from the right ventricular heart muscle, and each tissue sample will measure around 2 mm in size. Heart Transplant PatientsPatients If you choose to join this study and are eligible because you have a scheduled surgery to get a heart transplant, we will get your permission to store some of your heart or vascular tissue indefinitely for research. This tissue would normally be discarded (thrown away) after being sent to pathology for examination. For all all participants in the study, the following will occur:
  • We will collect information from your medical records.
  • We will draw small blood samples from for research purposes before and after surgery.
