PREVENTABLE (Dementia Prevention in Older Adults)

Purpose of this Study

We are doing this study to find out if taking the study drug (Atorvastatin) can help older adults live longer and healthier by preventing dementia, disability, or heart disease. *The study drug is a statin, which is usually used to help lower cholesterol levels.

Who Can Participate?

Eligibility

Adults ages 75+ who:
  • Do not currently take a statin
  • Do not have heart disease
  • Do not have dementia
  • Are able to perform everyday activities

What is Involved?

Description

If you choose to join this study, you willd get a random assignment (like a coin flip) to 1 of 2 groups:
  • Group 1 will take the study drug daily (Atorvastatin)
  • Group 2 will take a placebo daily (harmless pill that does nothing)
All participants will:
  • Give a blood sample
  • Complete memory tests
  • Complete physical tests
*This study will last 5 years. If you are interested, you have the choice of participating in either Durham, NC or Kannapolis, NC.
